Short video series and coaching

Client: School of Culture and Communications, Faculty of Arts

Impact: Holistic uplift of capstone subject

Utilising a hybrid model of professionally producing videos and coaching the academic team, we created a suite of high-quality resources and uplifted Perspectives in Global Media Cultures as a whole subject, without exceeding the project budget.

"Thanks for your special, delicate and very informative lectures! I have to say, these documentary-like videos are the most different lectures I’ve seen since I entered the university." - Hanchi (International Student)

Process: A multi-faceted approach to multimedia

Dr Robert Hassan approached Learning Environments having already completed several independent video recording projects. With this experience under his belt, he was seeking assistance to take his recordings for capstone subject,  Perspectives in Global Media Communication, to a new level.

At first, we facilitated a number of discovery sessions with Dr Hassan to identify the key learning outcomes of the project and how the project’s budget could best be utilised in respect to these. A plan was then defined that allowed the Learning Environments team to focus on delivering six high-quality eight-minute videos.

Scripts were drafted by our team of accomplished screenwriters, translating Dr Hassan’s subject matter expertise into engaging media, with accompanying visuals were selected to elevate and complement the dialogue rather than simply reiterate it.

In addition to the knowledge Dr Hassan developed during the filming process, we were able to offer technical upskilling through coaching. Our training responded to the identified goal of improving sound and image quality in self-produced recordings, making best use of the project budget. This allowed him to create a cohesive suite of media resources that complement the professionally-recorded videos. Through this process, Dr Hassan improved his media literacy and production skills, positioning him as a innovator in media for teaching and learning within his faculty.

This project was produced by Video and Media. Supporting excellence in teaching and research at the University of Melbourne.
