TV and radio recording

Television broadcasts, films and education videos can now be sourced online and embedded into the LMS as streaming videos.

Free-to-air television

If you are looking for a specific program then a request can be made via email to Collection Development. If your request is approved, they will license the video and send you the HTML code for embedding into the LMS. Please allow up to two weeks for requests.

If you are currently using an off-air broadcast recording or commercial program from a VHS tape and want to use it online or play in a teaching space that has no VHS player, it needs to be first determined if an alternative digital source already exists. You can either search for it from the sites above, or contact Collection Development to assist with the search.

If an alternative digital source cannot be found and the item is an off-air broadcast recording recorded after 1990, the tape should then be delivered to the Video and Media Production team to perform the format conversion (charges may apply). The converted video file will then either be sent directly to the requester for playback in class, or if intended for LMS delivery, sent to Collection Development to be uploaded to the Kanopy streaming system and incorporated into the library catalogue. There is no need to contact the Copyright Office as the Part VA licence allows format shifting from VHS to digital for recordings after 1990.

If an alternative digital source cannot be found and the item is either an off-air broadcast recording recorded prior to 1990 or a commercial program then Collection Development will contact the Copyright Office to determine if the item can be converted under a provision in the copyright act or if permission is required from the copyright owners to make a digital copy available. Once the Copyright Office has advised that the item to can be copied, the tape should then be delivered to the Video and Media Production team to perform the format conversion (charges may apply). The converted video file will then either be sent directly to the requester for playback in class, or if intended for LMS delivery, sent to Collection Development to be uploaded to the Kanopy streaming system and incorporated into the library catalogue.

Please allow up to two weeks for recently aired programs to be made available online. For programs that require format conversion from VHS tape or additional copyright approval, this process may take longer.

Australian podcasts and webcasts can be copied for educational purposes if they were originally 'born' as free broadcasts. See here for more information.
