Workshop name | Description | Workshop type |
---|---|---|
Applying a framework to your learning analytics |
Learning analytics can give teaching staff detailed insight into how learners are engaging with the subject content and learning activities presented to them. Participants will be presented with a framework that provides an effective structure for using learning analytics in learning and teaching. There will be an overview of the learning analytics available from Canvas and beyond. There will be collaborative tasks in which participants will use their own subjects for exploration. | Preparing for teaching |
Crafting great quizzes |
Discover how you can craft and deliver high-quality formative and graded quiz questions as a part of your assessment strategy. In this interactive workshop, we will unravel the key strategies for designing and delivering high-quality quiz questions. We’ll start by looking at where quizzes may fit within the curriculum and their place within an overarching assessment strategy. You’ll see some examples of well-designed quiz questions, as we break down the components of a good question and offer best-practice advice to ensure effective outcomes are reached. | Assessment and feedback |
Crafting interactive lectures |
Discover ways to make sure lectures are not passive experiences, but opportunities to deepen learning in your students.
This workshop will include activities and strategies to increase interactivity in your lectures. | Build cohorts, create community |
Creating rubrics for assessment |
A well-designed rubric should not only clarify expectations and make assessment transparent for students – but it should also make marking uniform and save time for your assessors.
By the end of this workshop, you will be able to design rubrics aligned to your assessment criteria and subject outcomes, compose clear descriptors to distinguish grade levels, and be able to add your rubrics to the LMS. | Assessment and feedback |
Designing assessment for large cohorts |
Teaching large cohorts (anywhere from 100 to over 2000 students per subject) poses specific challenges in assessment design, structure, marking and standardisation.
This workshop provides an overview of useful assessment strategies for large cohorts. These include, but are not limited to; effective rubric design, providing clear and specific examples for the different grading levels, alternative feedback methods, examples of successful scenarios in other disciplines, and where to find the supported tools/who to consult for advice on available technologies that may assist in your assessing and marking. | Assessment and feedback |
Designing authentic assessments | This workshop explores theory and practice of authentic assessment in higher education. Authentic assessment refers to designing and assessing tasks which closely resemble those encountered in professional practice. After an exploration of the key principles, you will have the opportunity to explore examples of authentic assessment in different disciplines, and practise applying an authentic design framework. | Assessment and feedback |
Designing group work | Aligned with ASE Strategy’s commitment to “embed more frequent small-group, inquiry-based learning activities within subjects, particularly medium and large subjects” this workshop will introduce you to practices that cultivate teamwork, enhance critical thinking, and foster a dynamic learning environment such as Team-Based Learning (TBL), Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) in groups, effective group formation, group activity facilitation methods, and troubleshooting common challenges. You will also see some of the educational technology that can help facilitate collaborative learning in this context. | Build cohorts, create community |
Developing activities with H5P | This workshop provides a full overview of the many different tools provided by H5P to enhance the content that teaching staff provide online for their students. As well as learning how to use H5P and integrate it into your LMS subject, the workshop focuses on proper pedagogical uses for different H5P tools to ensure that the interactive activities created for your subject will be additive and boost learning and revision for your students. | Designing for flexible learning |
Developing activities with PollEverywhere | This workshop provides an overview of and opportunity to experiment with the core features and activities available in PollEverywhere. Participants will experience activities as both student and teacher, developing skills to create activities and embed them into PowerPoint and the LMS. The workshop will also provide participants with some ideas for types of activities that could be used in teaching contexts. | Designing for flexible learning |
Developing collaborative activities with Padlet |
Padlet is a web-based whiteboard tool that is useful for promoting student-centred and active learning. It supports virtual brainstorming, collation and collaboration activities and is useful for encouraging collaboration with both synchronous and asynchronous learning activities.
This workshop covers practical strategies for using the tool to assist with directing discussion, reflection, brainstorming, content curation and a range of collaborative learning contexts. | Build cohorts, create community |
DIY video – device recording |
Recording your own content with a smart phone device can be challenging. The key is having good knowledge of your tech and applying your knowledge with a film maker’s eye. In this DIY workshop, we will take you through the steps required to set up a successful self-recording with a smart phone device.
We will cover essential equipment requirements and show you some film making hacks for lighting and camera stabilisation.
We will get you to re-imagine your location through the eyes of a studio set designer and provide you with some hints and tips on presenting that will increase the production value of your content. | Preparing for teaching |
DIY video editing – advanced | Build upon your newly acquired basic editing skills. Now you know some of the fundamentals, we’ll look at introducing creativity and style. In this workshop we will discuss the philosophy of editing, using transitions, cleaning up audio and music, and general editing tips. | Preparing for teaching |
DIY video editing – essentials | Video editing is considered by some to be a craft and editors can spend a lifetime in pursuit of a great cut. However, being able to embrace key tricks of the trade for your own video productions can be easily achieved. In this workshop, we will introduce the fundamentals of editing your video content, explore the post-production workflow and discuss how best to apply those rules. | Preparing for teaching |
Exploring ePortfolios and reflection activities |
This workshop provides teaching staff with a chance to look at their learning and teaching goals against an ePortfolio and reflective learning approach as well different options in PebblePad that might suit.
This session includes a practical, hands-on activity to create an action plan for introducing ePortfolios and reflection across a subject and course. Attendees will also work in small groups to brainstorm ideas, share insights, and receive feedback on their plan. | Designing for flexible learning |
Getting started with your LMS | This workshop is an introduction to the Canvas LMS new teaching staff who have little to no familiarity or experience using the Canvas LMS system. We aim to provide you with the skills you need to access and navigate Canvas, build content in a subject, as well as identify and interact with the interface of the LMS. By the end of this workshop, you will be able to customise and edit your Canvas LMS and be able to create and edit pages and modules. | Preparing for teaching |
Introducing Universal Design for Learning (UDL) | The purpose of this workshop is to expose beginners to the concepts of UDL and generate a positive commitment toward UDL practice. | Designing for flexible learning |
Learning design meet-ups |
The learning design meet-up is a series of monthly meetings for colleagues across the university to discuss a range of topics related to designing, building, and managing a variety of subjects and learning activities. We present a variety of topics during the year and invite people to share their practices and experiences. | Learning design |

Learning design community of practice
The learning design community of practice meets every month, alternating between online sessions (via Zoom) and in person problem solving sessions. The community includes colleagues from across the University who are interested in learning design. It has been running for several years and includes learning designers, academic staff and professional staff that are supporting the LMS.
In the online session the groups share topics they want to discuss, and presenters are found to share their practices and experiences related to the topic. Topics are typically related to designing, building, and managing of subjects and learning activities. Topics and speakers are announced closer to the date of each session.
The Design Lab is held every second session on campus and with no fixed topic and no presentations—just focused discussion and collective problem-solving.
The community has a Microsoft Teams site to share practice and ask questions. All online sessions are recorded and can be accessed through the Microsoft Teams site. Informal in-person meet ups are set up regularly throughout the year.
If you would like to be a part of the community, please email us .
Note: Meeting time and dates are subject to change. Any changes will be posted in Microsoft Teams.
