How do I assess student's input into online group tasks?

Online group tasks offer a range of opportunities for students to engage collaboratively with their peers, and to demonstrate their contribution to a team.

A common challenge occurs, however, in determining the level of contribution of each individual student and issues of fairness.

The LMS offers a range of tools to ensure groups members can communicate effectively with each other and their facilitators. These tools also provide useful analytics that show how individual members have engaged with activities within the LMS.

The Pages tool in the LMS works similarity to a wiki page where content can be contributed to a page by each student in the group, and those contributions can be tracked and presented visually in Analytics view.

The group Discussion tool can also be used to assess students group work, where the members a group can communicate with each other using the tool. LMS Pages and Discussions allow students to also upload files, embed videos, or other types of media.

For students

  • Student group/collaborative work is stored safely and does not rely on a particular student's hardware.
  • A collaborative document tool provides a way to organise group work and version control.
  • Online group tasks enable all group participants to contribute regardless of distance/barriers from campus and is shown to further enable 'shy' students to contribute.
  • Students can learn from each other and create communities of inquiry, developing workplace skills and teamwork ethic.

For educators

  • SpeedGrader in the LMS isolates each student’s comments from the thread and combines them into one easily readable view for grading.
  • Teaching staff can gain insight into how students view the assignment.
