Generic skills

Generic skills, also referred to as 'graduate attributes' or 'twentieth century skills', refer to lifelong skills students need to learn that apply to broad aspects of life, and are not specific to a certain class or subject. It may include skills such as:

• Academic writing
• Public speaking or presenting
• Working in groups
• Research skills
• Critical thinking
• Reading
• Global citizens.

The aim of a video designed to teach generic skills is to ensure students have an understanding of, and familiarity with using a range of skills that are transferrable to a variety of fields that they will encounter as lifelong learners. A video of this kind should have a focus on teaching and demonstrating practicable skills, rather than general background knowledge.
