Exploring Melbourne’s urban forests with Learning Environments and MSPACE

Can you imagine living in a city without trees? With Melbourne facing the loss of up to 44% of its trees in the next 20 years, there are some vital roles in the urban greenspace industry that need filling.
When launching the new Australian School of Urban Forestry, The Melbourne School of Professional and Continuing Education (MSPACE) and the School of Ecosystem and Forest Sciences approached the video team at Learning Environments to help communicate their vision of greener, more resilient cities.
From the outset, the project team wanted to showcase urban forests around Melbourne as host of the inaugural run of the course. Learning Environments has a CASA certified quadcopter pilot on staff, who was able to capture some unique aerial footage contrasting Melbourne’s rapid development with its treasured pockets of greenspace and the suburban green canopy.
For a course focused on professional development, it was also important to incorporate the voices of urban foresters working in the field. The City of Melbourne invited the crew to meet one of their urban foresters, who arranged a rare visit to the rooftop gardens of Council House 2.
