The Burnley Plant Guide (BPG) is an indexed, searchable database of plants, supporting learning by students at the University of Melbourne, particularly those at the Burnley campus.
Learning Environments staff, in collaboration with the Department of Resource Management and Geography (Burnley campus), developed the BPG Online website in 2012. Building on this, and utilising the same database, we developed an iOS app in 2014. Now, in 2017, we are preparing to launch an Android version of the BPG app.
Features of the app include:
- Keyword searching
- Advanced searching by botanical, common, and family names
- Plant categories
The app utilises functions such as a camera ‘snap’ feature allowing users to photograph plants out on location. Images can then be saved to album and plant lists for future reference and for sharing with others. Images are automatically tagged with GPS map locations and can be captioned and tagged with meta information.
