Designing blended learning |
The recent experience of emergency remote teaching allowed many educators to try or experiment with modes of learning that moved beyond established F2F teaching practices. The appetite for adopting practices that ‘worked, is now coupled with an increasing shift in student behaviour around how and when
they learn. This context is the background for revisiting what blended learning truly is and how, when applied based on tried and tested learning design models, it can benefit students and instructors alike. We will explore the balanced integration of online and F2F methods, gaining practical insights into creating interactive and flexible learning. |
Designing group work | Aligned with the ASE strategy’s commitment to “embed more frequent small-group, inquiry-based learning activities within subjects, particularly medium and large subjects” this workshop will introduce you to practices that cultivate teamwork, enhance critical thinking, and foster a dynamic learning environment such as team-based learning (TBL), inquiry-based learning (IBL) in groups, effective group formation, group activity facilitation methods, and troubleshooting common challenges. You will also see some of the educational technology that can help facilitate collaborative learning in this context. |
Developing collaborative activities with Padlet | Padlet is an online tool that supports virtual brainstorming, collation and collaboration activities. By the end of this workshop, you will be able to set up a Padlet account, identify the key features and how to use Padlet, and consider how different activities can be incorporated into a particular teaching context. |

We will get you to re-imagine your location through the eyes of a studio set designer and provide you with some hints and tips on presenting that will increase the production value of your content. |
DIY video editing - hands on workshop | Video editing is considered by some to be a craft and editors can spend a lifetime in pursuit of a great cut. However, being able to embrace key tricks of the trade for your own video productions can be easily achieved. In this workshop, we will introduce the fundamentals of editing your video content, explore the post-production workflow and discuss how best to apply those rules. |
Getting started with your LMS | This workshop is an introduction to the Canvas LMS new teaching staff who have little to no familiarity or experience using the Canvas LMS system. We aim to provide you with the skills you need to access and navigate Canvas, build content in a subject, as well as identify and interact with the interface of the LMS. By the end of this workshop, you will be able to customise and edit your Canvas LMS and be able to create and edit pages and modules. |
Applying a framework to your learning analytics |
Learning analytics can give teaching staff detailed insight into how learners are engaging with the subject content and learning activities presented to them. Learning design meet up
The learning design meet up is a community of practice that meets every 4 weeks (via Zoom) and includes colleagues from across the University who are interested in learning design. It has been running for several years and includes learning designers, academic staff and professional staff that are supporting the LMS.
The groups share topics they want to discuss, and presenters are found to share their practices and experiences related to the topic. Topics are typically related to designing, building, and managing of subjects and learning activities. People share their stories of innovative use of technologies in learning and teaching. The community provides the opportunity to collaborate with other faculties and areas of the University and hear their learning design challenges and solutions.
The community has a Microsoft Teams site to share practice and ask questions. All meet ups are recorded and can be accessed through the Microsoft Teams site. Informal in-person meet ups are set up regularly throughout the year.
If you would like to be a part of the community, please email leworkshops-tickets@groups.unimelb.edu.au
