Consent Matters

The University of Melbourne launched the Consent Matters: Boundaries, Respect and Positive Interventions (Consent Matters) e-learning program on 15 January 2018.

The interactive program provides guidance around safe and respectful sexual relationships and is made available to students through one of the Understand Student Conduct Expectations communities, hosted on the Learning Management System (LMS). Completion of the course is a requirement for commencing undergraduate students.

The Consent Matters program takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes to complete, providing information about:

  • the importance of consent in sexual relationships,
  • the effective use of communication skills in relationships
  • how to take bystander action
  • relevant internal and external support services

There is a multiple-choice quiz, which provides students the opportunity to ‘check’ their understanding of the above content, with a requirement that they answer all 10 questions correctly to achieve a pass. Learning Environments played a critical role in facilitating the implementation of Consent Matters on the LMS, and continues to provide technical support to the growing numbers participating students.

The Understand Student Conduct Expectations community is managed by the Safer Community program. If staff or students have any questions about the Consent Matters program, please contact Cath Sedunary, (Acting) Manager Campus Community on 8344 7556.
