New LMS for the University of Melbourne

The new LMS for The University of Melbourne will be Canvas.

How did we make this selection?

The tender process to evaluate the LMS options took place between July and October 2018. The process required the candidate LMS vendors to address and demonstrate how they met criteria that were collectively derived from over 8,500 staff and student responses to the LMS review survey, and from Faculty and School representative workshops, and similar stakeholder discussions. An evaluation team which included representatives from the Academic Board, Faculties and Graduate Schools, Learning Environments, and Infrastructure Services completed a rigorous review of the vendors' tender responses in the following key areas:

  • University of Melbourne functional requirements
  • Key feature presentations and videos
  • Accessibility
  • Ability to deliver and implement the new system
  • Technical requirements
  • Ability to maintain and support the new system.

The evaluation panel finalised their review by recommending the selection of Canvas. This has now been endorsed by the Project Steering Group, and co-sponsors of the project, Professor Gregor Kennedy, Pro Vice-Chancellor Teaching & Learning, and Byron Collins, Executive Director Infrastructure Services and Chief Technology Officer.

Next steps

A program will now commence to roll out the new LMS, starting in 2019, with plans for a full launch in time for semester 1, 2020. The project teams will be working on detailed planning of the implementation, integration and migration work involved in moving to Canvas. The project teams will work very closely with nominees and key stakeholders from Academic Divisions to ensure that all areas have input into the planning of their migration activity according to their particular schedules and requirements. Further communications and a new project website for the implementation program will be launched soon.
