LMS unavailable due to upgrade: Monday 18 December 2017

The LMS will be unavailable Monday 18 December 2017 between 6am and 2pm (with an extension to 5pm if required) for essential maintenance.

As with all scheduled maintenance periods, the teams involved will attempt to return the LMS to availability in the shortest time-frame possible, but this window has been set to allow for the delivery of complex works. Staff and students are advised to review any arrangements for assessment, online learning or teaching events. If required, staff and students should download any subject materials beforehand including Readings Online and downloadable Lecture Capture recordings.

Change to Blackboard Assignment tool

The upcoming maintenance window will result in a change to the Blackboard assignment tool which allows staff to directly comment on student submissions and write feedback on the paper to students.

The inline commenting tool is changing from the Crocodoc annotation tool to the new Box annotation tool. Inline comments on all assignments prior to 18 December will be migrated across to the new tool and be viewable but not editable.

The old tool allowed inline comments on Word (DOC, DOCX), PowerPoint (PPT, PPTX), Excel (XLS, XLSX) or PDF (PDF) file types. The new Box inline commenting tool now allows inline commenting on a wider range of text and image file types.

Furthermore, Box provides a native player to play audio and video file types.

The type of inline annotations is now limited to highlighting text and writing comments. Previous features such as free-hand annotations are no longer available. The ability to download annotated papers will become available in future updates to the Box annotation tool.

All other aspects of the Blackboard assignment tool remain the same such as student submission, student email receipts, grading assignments, rubrics as well as general feedback and grades.
