How to control visibility of grades in Canvas

The 'Grades' area in Canvas allows teaching staff to control the visibility of grades to students in a number of ways.

Grade Posting Policy

The primary method to control grades visibility is the Canvas 'Grade Posting Policy'. You can set the 'Grade Posting Policy' at the higher level so that it applies to the whole Grades area, or to individual columns. We recommend setting your Grade Posting Policy to 'Manually Post Grades' (rather than ‘Automatically Post') as this means grades are hidden until you manually reveal them to students.

Note that for all subjects, the overall Grades default setting is to 'Automatically Post' grades which means that when you enter a grade for a student, they can see it immediately.

When choosing your Grade Posting Policy for the whole Grades area, note that it will only apply to grade columns/assessments that were created after you make the setting change.

To set the ‘Grade Posting Policy’ to 'Manual' for your overall Grades area:

  1. Go to ‘Grades’ in your subject menu
  2. Click on the cog icon on the top right of the grade book
  3. Go to the ‘Grade Posting Policy’ tab
  4. Ensure that ‘Manually post grades’ is selected

The video below shows this process:

To set the ‘Grade Posting Policy’ to 'Manual' for a particular column in your Grades area:

You can also set the Grade Posting Policy for an individual column as opposed to the overall Grades area, using the following steps.

(Note that if grades have already been made visible to students, setting your Grade Posting Policy to Manual will not hide those grades as they have already been revealed. If you would like to hide grades that have already been revealed, you need to manually hide the grades as outlined further down this page.)

  1. Go to ‘Grades’ in your subject menu
  2. Click on the 3 vertical dots in the column heading
  3. Choose ‘Grade Posting Policy
  4. Ensure that ‘Manually post grades’ is selected

To manually post grades to students:

On each individual grade column, you can click on the 3 dots next to the column title and see the option to ‘Post grades’ for that column. This will then show the grades to students.

  1. Go to ‘Grades’ in your subject
  2. Find the relevant column
  3. Click on the 3 vertical dots in the column heading
  4. Select ‘Post grades’ >> Everyone>> click ‘Post

To manually hide grades that have previously been revealed to students:

  1. Go to ‘Grades’ in your subject
  2. Find the relevant column
  3. Click on the 3 vertical dots in the column heading
  4. Select ‘Hide Grades’ >> click 'Hide'

You will now see an icon of an eye with a slash through it next to the column title indicating that students cannot see grades in that column.
