The University of Melbourne is about to launch its newest Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) – Foundations of International Psychiatry. Opening on November 6, this free five week course developed in consultation with leading psychiatrists from the World Psychiatric Association, introduces learners to the fundamental skills and knowledge required when working with mentally unwell patients.
Students enrolled in this course will learn the basics of psychiatric interviewing, history taking, and mental state examination. Concepts that guide understanding and treatment of mental illness, especially those related to culture and identity will also be explored.
The syllabus developed for this course includes a mix of presentations, patient interactions, reading material and interactive exercises to ensure that those who participate are exposed to an interesting, varied and authentic learning experience.
The MOOC will be most relevant to healthcare professionals working with patients who have mental health difficulties and for those planning to undertake further studies in this vitally important and exciting field of mental health. This course will also be of interest to medical and nursing students planning on working in this field in future.
