Information for students: The new Canvas Learning Management System (LMS)
In semester 2, 2019 a select number of subjects will be delivered in the University's new Canvas LMS.
To find out if you are enrolled in a Canvas subject for semester 2, see below for the full list of subjects being taught through Canvas.
All other subjects in Semester 2, 2019 will continue to be taught using Blackboard LMS and should use the 'Blackboard LMS' link (below) to access their subject.

Background: why do we need a new LMS?
In 2018, the University launched an initiative to understand and document the University's current and emerging requirements for an LMS, and to facilitate a decision on the next LMS for the University. As part of the review process, an online survey was conducted about the LMS, asking staff and students for feedback and information about what they would like to see in a future LMS. 7,992 students and 816 staff completed the survey, and several key pain points relating to the LMS were identified, including:
- Lack of good user experience and lack of accessibility on mobile devices
- Issues with reliability and functionality
- Lack of an enterprise system for hosting video for teaching and learning
How was Canvas chosen?
Once a robust set of requirements was developed, the tender process to evaluate the LMS options took place between July and October in 2018. Candidate LMS vendors were asked to address and demonstrate how they met criteria that were derived not only from survey responses, but also from Faculty and School representative workshops, and other stakeholder discussions. An evaluation team which included representatives from the Academic Board, Faculties and Graduate Schools, Learning Environments, and Infrastructure Services completed a rigorous review of the vendors' tender responses, and recommended the adoption of Canvas as the new LMS.
Some of the benefits of Canvas include:
- Clean, intuitive and organised layout
- Simple navigation and edit functions
- User-friendly mobile navigation and content display
- New options to support assessment, including an 'Assignment Speed Grader', peer-reviewed assignments, and submission of video assignments (Kaltura)
Subjects in Canvas, Semester 2, 2019
Canvas will be implemented across the University beginning with a pilot group of subjects in Semester 2, 2019. Faculties were asked to nominate a list of subjects for inclusion in the pilot. After a period of work migrating subject content from the existing LMS to the new Canvas LMS, the following subjects are confirmed as being taught in Canvas in semester 2, 2019:

How will this affect me?
If you are enrolled in one of the above-listed subjects in Semester 2, 2019, you will be using the new Canvas LMS to complete the subject. All your other subjects will continue to be taught from the current Blackboard LMS this semester. This means that students enrolled in pilot subjects as well as non-pilot subjects will be using two different platforms - both Canvas and Blackboard.
If you are not enrolled in a pilot Canvas subject this semester, you do not need to do anything differently. Likewise, students who are new to the University this semester and who are not enrolled in a Canvas pilot subject, will be undertaking their studies using the Blackboard LMS. Students not enrolled in a Canvas subject for Semester 2 do not need to do anything to prepare for the roll-out of Canvas in 2020. However, if you would like to familiarise yourself with Canvas before the full implementation in 2020, there are a number of ways to find further information, as listed in the 'How can I get help using Canvas?' section below.
Students enrolled in a Canvas subject this semester will receive further separate communications via their faculties.
What is Kaltura?
At the same time as the University's LMS was under review, a new Video Management System (VMS) was investigated. The University generates a lot of video; hundreds of gigabytes and thousands of individual videos are currently spread across dozens of different accounts and hosting platforms. For this reason, the idea of implementing an enterprise video solution was investigated. After assessing the options, Kaltura was chosen as the best option for hosting video at the University.
- Management of large volumes of video content
- Will enable new and innovative uses of video for teaching, learning and engagement
- Will integrate with the new Canvas LMS.
Kaltura will be implemented as the University's new Video Management System (VMS) at the same time as the new LMS, Canvas.
Further information about Kaltura can be found on the VMS section of the Learning Environments website.
