Video and audio - recording, editing and uploading

Learning Environments have prepared some pointers on how to get the most out of the equipment you have readily available in your workspace or pocket, or through the Self Service portal (Mac) or Software Centre (PC) for self-recording lectures.

Hardware

Microphones

Almost all laptops and desktops have a built-in microphone, but generally it’s very small and located right next to your computer’s fan. So all desktop recordings can be improved by adding a microphone to your recording kit.

If a desktop USB mic is not available, a pair of mobile phone earbuds with inbuilt mic will still usually sound better than the microphone built into your laptop.

Webcams and lighting

Most laptops and desktops have a built-in camera. If you don't have a webcam, it is possible to create a screen-cast video which records what is on your screen such as a Slideshare.

If you are recording your face, arrange your webcam so that the camera is at eye level. Also consider the lighting in your workspace. Natural light from a window tends to look better than fluorescent light.

Software

For the purpose of preparing video and audio resources for students impacted by travel restrictions, we are recommending Echo360 Universal Capture, which is available to all staff by logging into Lecture Capture itself or the Self Service portal for Macs or Software Centre for PCs.
