Using LMS Quizzes (timer or no timer) as off-campus digital open book exams

LMS quizzes can be used for a timed or untimed exam in which students answer a series of questions online. These can be set up so that they are only open for a specific window of time, with individual exceptions applied for students that have alternative exam arrangements (AEAs)

Quiz guides

Exam types suitable for LMS Quizzes

  • Exams with multiple-choice or other automatically answered quiz questions
  • Exams with short answer questions
  • Exams that utilise question banks and some randomisation of questions
  • Exams that require detailed time records that show when students have responded to questions.

Features

  • Students can be presented with a series of questions that use different question types.
  • A range of question types is available, including:
    • Multiple Choice
    • True/False
    • Fill in the blanks
    • Fill in the multiple blanks
    • Multiple Answers
    • Multiple dropdowns
    • Matching
    • Numerical Answer
    • Formula question
    • Essay Question
    • File Upload Question
    • Text (no question).
  • Randomised versions of the quiz can be created through the use of Question Banks to supply different versions of questions. Multiple Question Banks can be created, each containing multiple versions of a question. When the quiz is created, a group of questions, or an individual question, is identified to be selected from a particular Question Bank.
  • Some questions types are automatically marked, including ‘Multiple Choice’ and ‘Multiple Answers’.
  • SpeedGrader can be used to review all questions from each student and mark questions that require manual marking, including ‘Essay (short answer) questions’ and ‘file upload questions’.
  • Quizzes are a straightforward experience for students and are simple to complete.
  • Answers are autosaved as the student completes each question.
  • Students can lose connection to the quiz and return to their answers saved and continue working in the quiz.
  • A time limit can be set for each quiz, and the timer is displayed to students. When the time limit is reached, the quiz will be automatically submitted. Student attempts are automatically submitted when time limit or Until date is reached, whichever comes first.
  • Students receive an onscreen confirmation of their submission.
  • Alternative exam arrangements (AEA) are integrated.
  • Quiz responses can be used to generate a Turnitin Similarity reports using the Quiz to Turnitin tool.

Other considerations

  • If using Quiz (timer) - there is no provision for a separate technical submission time window, the quiz will auto submit at the ‘due date time’ or when the ‘timer’ finishes. Submission time needs to be incorporated in the total time of the quiz.
  • A Quiz cannot be set up for students to choose out of a set of questions (ie 'please answer 3 of the 5 questions below').
  • The LMS will show that a quiz has been submitted, but students do not receive an email confirmation of their submission.
  • Students can only submit once to a single attempt quiz.
  • If using Quiz (no timer) - there is no countdown timer for students, so they must be aware of the time left to submit their files.
  • The time required for scanning and uploading documents needs to be considered when using the File Upload question type. It is recommended to use the Quiz (no timer) exam type to give students additional upload time. Please see the digital exam submission windows website for more information.
